Let’s take action for equitable access to drinking and running water!
A shocking reality!
Did you know that as you’re reading this, hundreds of Indigenous families in Quebec and Canada have no drinking water and sometimes no direct access to any water? Even today, access to running and drinking water is not universal! Imagine having to boil your water every day or, even worse, having to do all your household and personal hygiene tasks without water.
“In Aupaluk, Nunavik.
There’s been no drinking water in the village for days, even weeks. […] We have no news. We don’t know when we’re going to get water again.”
Invite your students to take a stand and join the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ) campaign for access to running and drinking water throughout Quebec. |
How to get involved
Starting on March 22 – World Water Day
- Read the testimonials from people living in Nunavik, who are regularly deprived of running water for days or weeks each month.
- Use the educational resources developed for schools but adaptable for all sectors, to promote this cause to your students.
- Join the campaign’s first joint action by sending postcards to elected officials to demand concrete commitments. You can obtain printed postcards from your union, print the template yourself, or use our virtual postcards. Please note that postcards mailed to federal elected officials do not require a stamp.
September
A second joint action will be organized to continue the movement (details to come).
More actions to raise awareness among your students and colleagues
- Organize a minute of silence in solidarity with affected communities.
- Create drawings and posters in support and display them at your location.
- Wear a visible symbol, like a piece of blue string, to show your commitment.
- Go without water for a day to understand what it’s really like.
- Draw a multitude of drops of water with chalk in the schoolyard.
- Gather your students in the shape of a giant drop of water to make a big impression.
